The following is my response/rebuttal to an answer on Quora.com. The question posed was: “What can Canada do to improve the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?”. The answer to which I was responding linked to a video of a man being arrested for (allegedly) trespassing, and a link to a website purporting to provide further information on said arrest.
I’ve watched the video and looked at the website link, and as a result I have some concerns:
- The video simply does not show any ‘freedom’ being violated, other than the freedom to cause a disturbance, and the freedom to trespass on someone else’s private property. The conversation with the police, especially, is chopped up to the point where it creates the impression that the video’s creator is leaving out key information, or is trying to hide something that would cast either the store management or the police in a more sympathetic light. (Is there a reason that any of the conversations depicted aren’t shown in their entirety, particularly if there’s nothing to hide?)
- The man in the video, “Sam”, tells the police that he does not believe in the court system — a system the officers themselves serve, and which is one of the pillars of any democratic society. Naturally, this sets the stage…
